Bookmakers are pricing up who is in line to replace Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in England’s World Cup squad.
The 24-year-old Liverpool midfielder saw his dreams of playing in Russia come to an end when he damaged his knee against Roma in the Champions League semi-final at Anfield.
“The extent of the injury means Oxlade-Chamberlain is set to miss the remainder of the campaign for Liverpool, as well as the World Cup in Russia with England,” Liverpool said in a statement.
“Oxlade-Chamberlain will now begin a rehabilitation programme to enable him to reach full fitness again as soon as possible, returning to action next season.”
Bookmakers have now priced up the most likely replacements in the final 23, with Manchester City’s Fabian Delph and Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek the early favourites at 5/4 and 6/4 respectively.
In-form Newcastle man Jonjo Shelvey has been cut to 7/4 whilst the Ox’s team-mate James Milner has also come into contention at 8/1.
Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “What’s bad news for The Ox is great news for Shelvey, Delph and Loftus-Cheek, whose odds of replacing the Liverpool man have all been trimmed, but could we see a shock return to international football for Milner? Our traders aren’t ruling it out just yet.”
