One For Arthur favourite to reclaim crown

Grand National winner One For Arthur has already been installed as favourite to reclaim his crown at Aintree in 2018.

One For Arthur took the the world’s greatest steeplechase on Saturday, becoming only the second ever Scottish trained national winner following on from Rubstic back in 1979.

But Russell is not really thinking about next season just yet, saying: “That’s it now for Arthur this season. He is entered in the Scottish National, but he won’t be racing. We’ll take him out to the field for a nice summer break and then he’ll be back at Kelso hopefully in October.

“The bookies have already made him the favourite for next year’s National, but there’s no pressure on him. He dictates the pressure and he’s been a super horse to train. He really does have some ability.

“Straight after the race I kept thinking, ‘This is incredible, I’ve just won the Grand National’ and it doesn’t really sink in. It’s just been my ambition all the time.”

WilliamHill have One For Arthur listed at 20/1 and they admit they took a pounding north of the border on the weekend.

“Early signs are that we won in England but got stuffed in Scotland,” said William Hill trading director Terry Pattinson. “Not our Grandest of Grand Nationals.”
