Paul Pogba on the move…not likely

Manchester United’s hierarchy are in no hurry to sell record signing Paul Pogba.

Pogba rejoined United in 2016 for a club record fee of just short of £90million, but his form – especially this season – has been criticised, and he has not always been in Jose Mourinho’s starting XI.

Some reports have claimed that Mourinho would be willing to let Pogba leave, in order to help finance a major spend this summer.

However, I have been told that United’s chiefs are not actively shopping him around and they firmly see the 25-year-old as a key squad member, in the long-term.

Pogba is also more than happy to remain in Manchester, and knows that his price tag – which would be well in excess of £100million – is only within reach of a handful of European teams – as he would no consider a move to China at this point of his career. That means Paris Saint Germain, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Chelsea.

Of those, PSG are being strongly linked, but again Pogba is not actively pushing for a move – although should they make a sizeable approach

We spoke to Tom McDermott of United We Stand, and he believes that Pogba will be staying put.

“From a financial point of view, given the money United have spent on him, Pogba will be given at least another season to show what he can do,” he said.

“There’s an incredibly talented player in there somewhere but Mourinho needs to find it and do so consistently. The time for Mourinho and Pogba to leave isn’t this summer but next season you feel is an incredibly important one for both.”

Bookmakers are also of the opinion that Pogba will be staying put at Old Trafford – PaddyPower make him 1/5 to remain, which is an implied probability of 83%.

Spokesman Paddy Power said: “Could the world’s once most expensive footballer be out of Old Trafford already?

“Jose Mourinho has fallen out with him, unsurprisingly, and our traders make PSG the favourite to be his next destination. The very club Jose was flirting with earlier in the season. Interesting.”
