Qabala slashed into Guineas favouritism

Qabala has made the new favourite for the 1000 Guineas after an impressive win at Newmarket’s Craven Meeting.

The Roger Varian trained filly was 40/1, but is now into 5/1 after winning the Nell Gwyn Stakes.

Varian said: “I was very impressed. She came in inexperienced only having the one start. She has worked well and she worked well last year before she ran and won. We have high hopes for her.

“When you come off the back of one run and go into a competitive race like this, you are never quite sure. I was delighted how she switched off and she quickened really well.”

Nicola McGeady of Ladbrokes said: “We have our 1000 Guineas favourite following on from Qabala’s impressive Nell Gwyn performance this afternoon. We went 7/1 straightaway, but were knocked over and were forced to go 5/1.”

Meanwhile, a decision on whether 2000 Guineas favourite Too Darn Hot will run in this race has yet to made but trainer John Gosden suggesting it is imminent.

The brilliant young colt, also favourite for the Derby, was found to have heat in a splint bone – which has set him back and ruled him out of the Greenham Stakes last week.

Gosden told ITV Racing: “He’s fine and coming along the right way. We’re going to make a decision, probably, just after the weekend.

“The heat is pretty well out of it altogether now, but I just want to be content that I’ve got the two clear weeks in which to bring him up to the race (2000 Guineas).

“I’ll be consulting with the owners. I’m very much hoping he will run at this stage.”
