The well-bred Farzeen has won two of her three career starts for Roger Varian and she has been installed as the 9/2 favourite at BetVictor for the opening Group 3 Sceptre Stakes at Doncaster this afternoon.

This represents a big step up grade for the three-year-old however, and I am going to give Angel’s Hideaway (2.10) a last chance to show that her fourth in the 1000 Guineas back in the spring was not a fluke. Note 8 out of the last 10 renewals of this race have been won by the classic generation.

The selection does not appear to appreciate running around a bend and she should be much more at home over this straight 7f. At 8/1 with BetVictor she gets the each way vote for John Gosden who has booked PJ McDonald with regular pilot Rab Havlin riding at Sandown and Salisbury.

If there is no significant rain I will be disappointed if Saroog (2.40) cannot defy a 5lbs rise for winning at Newmarket last time. The runner up – Maxwecan – has subsequently won at Goodwood, albeit stepped back up to two miles, but this extended 1m 6f trip on fast ground is perfect for Simon Crisford’s 5-year-old who is 5/4 market leader at BetVictor.

Dee Ex Bee is 2lbs better off with Stradivarius (3.10) in the Doncaster Cup for the length-and-a-quarter he was behind the selection in the Lonsdale Cup at York last time. The revised terms are unlikely to be enough to see Mark Johnston’s four-year-old reverse the form with the champion stayer who has yet to win this Group 2 event. At 4/9 with BetVictor the Gosden-trained equine star can extend his unbeaten record to 10.

At Sandown Spreadsheet (2.20) returns from a near two-month lay-off and drops down to the minimum trip having been clear at this distance when runner up at Yarmouth over 7f back in July. Roger Varian’s colt will get further in time, but the suggestion is that he has been showing plenty of pace on his home gallops.

The key to Siglo Six (3.55) appears to be a strongly run race over a mile on fast ground and with the perennial front-runner Alfred Boucher in the field he is taken to follow up his recent C&D success from a 4lbs higher mark. It wasn’t much of a race that Casanova won at Wolverhampton last time, but it was achieved in a decent time and he rates the main danger in a cracking Mile handicap.

Skyman (5.35) overcame trouble in running to win over C&D last time and a 6lbs rise looks fair given that was his first start at ten furlongs. He looks open to further improvement now that connections have found his optimum conditions.

Breathalyze (1.50) might have run into one when beaten at Chester last time and I hope to see Tom Dascombe’s juvenile return to winning ways back on the Roodeye in the opener. Mark Johnston’s Cognac made all at Musselburgh last time and the hope is that Richard Kingscote can track the likely front-runner before swooping fast and late.

If the ground is no worse than good to soft Gossip Column (4.40) can reverse recent C&D form with Hereby on 4lbs better terms for Ian Williams and Dr Marwan Koukash whose love affair with Chester is well documented.
