A wonderful week of racing at Goodwood and Galway last week but the news also broke that leading juvenile Calyx would miss the rest of the season for John Gosden. The unbeaten 2-y-old remains 7/1 at BetVictor for next year’s 2000 Guineas but I wouldn’t be in a rush to take that price about the Coventry Stakes winner until the extent of his setback is known.

Today’s feature meeting comes from Newbury and the Queen’s colours have been in the winners’ enclosure twice in recent days at Goodwood – courtesy of Seniority – and Market Rasen on Sunday via Comely.

Her Majesty’s Magnetic Charm goes in the opening juvenile fillies’ maiden and this daughter of Exceed And Excel ran a race full of promise when third over C&D last month on debut. The selection is a half-sister to three winners including a 12f winner (Usherette) and may well get further in time, but her sire produces a number of speedy juveniles and I expect James Doyle to make plenty of use of his mount.

Winter Light looks the obvious danger having ran on well when second at Sandown over 5f on debut and today’s additional furlong should suit. As with all Newbury maidens this promises to be an informative contest.

Good Effort is interesting on his handicap debut for Ismail Mohammed whose string are in good form, but Lethal Lunch (2.20) looked ready for a return to 7f when staying on at Haydock last time off this mark. The selection was squeezed out about two furlongs out on that occasion, but it made no difference to the result as he ran on when it was all too late.

No surprise to see Gunforhire (3.55) improve when handicapping for the first time at Newmarket last time when he appreciated the step up to 7f. That improved effort was gained on soft ground and the hope is that Richard Hannon’s grey is not ground dependent.

More was expected of Antiguan Rock (4.30) at Lingfield last time – given he went off 10/3 – but he was a well beaten third of six over a mile. His pedigree suggests he will improve for a step up to 10f and he begins life in handicaps off a mark of just 65.

Hannon’s Birthright disappointed at Doncaster on his latest start but he also hinted that a step up in trip would suit when third of 13 at Windsor over a mile on his penultimate start. A market move for this lightly-raced colt would be worth noting with James Doyle a significant booking.

Alexanderthegreat looked all stamina when getting up to defy a gamble on Sir Mark Prescott’s Twister at Lingfield last week. He is likely to be all the rage for his high-profile connections today, but I thought Trevena (5.00) would appreciate another couple of furlongs when winning a 3-runner 10f fillies’ handicap last time. A 2lbs rise looks fair.

At Nottingham Spanish Archer (6.55) has been off the track since finishing fourth C&D on debut back in May. His subsequent absence from the track is a slight cause for concern but James Fanshawe could do with a winner given his last six runners, at the time of writing, have all finished third.

The penny dropped far too late with Liquid Lunch (5.40) at Nottingham on debut, but he was backed as if he was well above average and today’s additional furlong will suit with the initial experience not lost on him.
