A wonderful four-days racing at York last week with the majestic Group 1 wins of Enable and Battash the high spots for many although nailing the Ebor winner (Mustajeer) at 16s was the personal highlight alongside the fluent success of Logician in the Gt Voltigeur Stakes. The unbeaten grey is now 6/4 at BetVictor for the St Leger at Doncaster next month.

No Group 1 action this afternoon and only four turf meetings in Britain this Bank Holiday Monday including Epsom’s flat card. In the wonderfully named Poundhound Doggy Dash Handicap Blue De Vega (3.05) is taken to follow up his recent Chelmsford win from a 2lbs lower mark with Cieren Fallon taking over in the saddle.  The selection finished third in the Investec Dash from a 2lbs higher mark on Derby Day and he has the best of the draw in stall eight – of eight – although his talented apprentice may have to weave a passage under the stands’ rail.

C’Est No Mour (3.40) is a dual C&D winner including when he won the corresponding Amateurs’ Derby two years ago from a 2lb higher mark under today’s pilot Simon Walker. The selection also finished third in this event 12 months ago on ground softer than ideal. Peter Hedger fits his 6-year-old with a visor for the first time this afternoon.

Setting Sail (4.15) faces just a couple of rivals in the 10f Conditions race for William Buick and Charlie Appleby whose yard continue to churn out the winners although they drew a blank at York and had few runners in the big events.

Light Up Our Stars (4.50) has only had four career starts but has a progressive profile and showed this 10f trip was well within his compass when third at Sandown when last seen on the track seven weeks ago.  Pat Dobbs was in the saddle when the selection won at Chepstow on his penultimate start over a mile and he is back in the plate for Richard Hughes’s three-year-old today.

At Ripon, Southern Rock has won three of his five starts since joining David O’Meara and is only 4lbs higher than when scoring over today’s C&D last time under Danny Tudhope. He must go close, but I am going to give The Trader (3.20) one last chance for Mark Johnston. The selection finished last at Goodwood last time, but this represents a drop down in class and, if he can get a soft lead under Joe Fanning, he might take some pegging back.

Ibraaz (4.30) steps back up to a mile having finished runner up at Newmarket over 7f from a 3lbs lower mark last time. Jim Crowley takes the ride on Roger Varian’s four-year-old. Top-weight Fayez is a big danger. David O’Meara’s gelding is a dual course winner, although both of those successes were gained over trips in excess of a mile.

Varian looks to have found a gilt-edged opportunity for Narynkol (5.05) who missed the whole of last season but looked a winner-in-waiting when runner up at Nottingham having his first start for over 400 days earlier in the month.

They also have a valuable card at Cartmel this afternoon but only four go to post for the extended three-mile handicap chase. Steel Wave was running on at the death at Bangor last time over 3m, but his regular pilot Tom Scudamore is in the plate on Max Do Brazil (3.50) and David Pipe’s runner gets the vote.

The selection is 2lbs out of the weights and jumped repeatedly out to his left at Perth last time – and not right-handed as is reported in the Racing Post. The return to a left-handed track will suit and he might be able to outstay his rivals despite being 2lbs “wrong” at the weights.

Scudamore is also in the plate on Dieg Man (4.25) whose course record reads 11 and who has a very good record when fresh. He returns from a three-month lay-off this afternoon. He is not yet the most fluent of jumpers and can carry his head a bit high, but he obviously enjoys his visits to the Lakes and gets the vote for Neil Mulholland.
