Chacun Pour Soi ran out an impressive winner of the Dublin Chase at Leopardstown on Saturday and the horse was trimmed to 3/1 (from 7/2) with BetVictor for the Champion Chase at Cheltenham next month. The racecourse executive were slammed by leading trainer Gordon Elliot for allowing the meeting to start on ground described as yielding although clerk of the course Lorcan Wyer put 3mls of water on the track on Sunday morning ahead of yesterday’s card despite 3mls of overnight rain.

Appreciate It was, arguably, the most impressive winner of the day, however, and the Willie Mullins’ trained six-year-old is 3/1 favourite at BetVictor for the Champion Bumper at the Festival.

Fontwell were forced to abandon today’s card through waterlogging, but they go on the flat at Wolverhampton this evening and over jumps at Carlisle where we begin today’s preview. In the opener the juvenile Goobinator (1.50) is taken to return to winning ways despite concerns remaining about the quality of his hurdling. The selection failed to give 6lbs to Hasankey at Wetherby over Christmas although he was reported post-race to have suffered a wound to his right-fore during the contest.

Ballybreen has improved in recent starts for the application of blinkers and he must have every chance as he chases a quick hat-trick for Evan Williams. The form of Cudgel’s (2.20) second at Catterick last time, however, has been boosted by the subsequent exploits of the winner – Ask Paddy – and a 3lbs rise for that effort is fair especially when you consider that was only his second start over the larger obstacles. The seven-year-old was given plenty to do last time and I hope to see Conor O’Farrell put his mount into the race earlier this afternoon.

Haul Us In has been raised 12lbs for a facile win at Uttoxeter last time and that might be enough to prevent her following up giving it wasn’t the strongest of races for the track. I am going to take a chance on Skewiff (4.00) who is another representative of the inform yard of Evan Williams. The mare has dropped to a decent mark and she ran a decent race back from a two-month lay-off last time over timber. Her best form is, arguably, on better ground but I hope she is not making the long journey up from south Wales just to fill the horsebox and she gets the vote in a competitive mares’ event.

There is a valuable Conditions event over an extended mile at Wolverhampton and I am loath to desert Another Touch who has done us a couple of favours in recent weeks but has little in hand of Via Serendipity (7.00) on Newcastle running last time. I think the latter can gain his revenge on this track this evening. The selection is drawn out wide in stall six of seven which is no help, but I hope Fox Power and Arcanada make it a true test and for Hayley Turner to finish fast and late.

I feel I must give Sheriffmuir (8.00) one last chance in the extended nine-furlong Betway Novice Stakes. The selection has finished runner up in his last three starts, but he steps up from a mile this evening and connections do appear to have found a very winnable looking race. Kieran O’Neill takes over in the saddle from Rab Havlin and he has a good draw in stall four. A market move for Martyn Mead’s Opportunist – well backed when disappointing on debut – would be worth noting with Ben Curtis again in the saddle.
