Racing Daily with BetVictor – Oct 23

I have been banging on about Kinross since his facile winning debut at Newmarket and reported yesterday that he had been entered in the Horris Hill Stakes at Newbury this weekend. He was put in at 7/4 with BetVictor on Monday afternoon but was backed into 5/4 on Tuesday morning for the 7f Group 3 juvenile contest.

There were 12 2-year-olds entered for the final Group 1 of the turf flat season the Vertem Futurity Stakes at Doncaster on Saturday. No fewer than 11 are trained by Aidan O’Brien.

As the Racing Post once famously wrote: Sad, Mad, Bad. Note Andrew Balding’s Kameko is the only non-Ballydoyle entry.

There is a valuable nursery at Newmarket this afternoon and I hope to see Convict (3.40) improve for the step up to 10f for William Haggas. The selection is a half-brother to leading stayer Hamish and finished runner up over a mile at York last time. Note, at the time of writing, Hamish’s impressive York win was the last success for a yard who have endured a frustrating period of late including a couple of seconds on Champions Day at Ascot on Saturday.

If the ground is no better than good to soft, I hope to see Be More (4.10) put up a bold show in the mile handicap for fillies. Andrew Balding’s daughter of Shamardal has won two and finished runner up in her three starts when the word soft has appeared in the official going description. William Buick takes over in the saddle with the champion jockey Oisin Murphy continuing his short break.

Switching codes and at Worcester The Boola Bee (12.15) was given too much to do at Wincanton last time and, in the circumstances, ran a terrific race to finish second. The mare gets on well with conditional jockey Tom Buckley, but I hope he puts his mount into the race a bit sooner than was the case on Thursday. She is already due to go up 4lbs in the weights but can race off the same mark today.

The Richard Davis Memorial Novice Handicap Chase is a cracker and I could give all 11 a realistic chance. Marginal preference at the foot of the weights, however, is for Chinensis (1.15) who won three times between the flags in his native Ireland and makes his chase debut from what could be a decent mark. The 6-y-old has had breathing problems and has had another wind operation since he faded close home to finish fourth at Hereford over hurdles.

I am convinced there are races to be won with Whiteoak Fleur this winter, but she may help set the race up for Floressa (2.55) who won a Bumper at Ludlow before going down narrowly at Cheltenham’s April meeting. She is related to a number of winners over timber and represents the powerful yard of Nicky Henderson. Aggy With It looks the main danger representing the Skeltons and the drying ground will certainly suit this daughter of Presenting.

At Kempton this evening Simply Susan (5.40) is taken to build on her all-weather debut when a good third from a poor draw out in stall 14 at Chelmsford. The selection has been luckier with the draw – stall two – tonight and she gets the each way nod in a competitive nursery.

At Wolverhampton Orchidia (5.55) obviously doesn’t take much racing and returns from another 100-day lay-off in the Maiden for fillies over an extended nine furlongs. Adam McNamara takes over in the saddle with Jason Watson doubling up at Newmarket and Kempton. Connections will be keen to get a win next to her name for breeding purposes.
