Colin Tizzard suggested in an interview with the Racing Post over the weekend that his second season chaser Mister Malarky was an ideal type for the Ladbrokes Trophy – formerly Hennessy Gold Cup – at Newbury in December. He was trimmed from 25s to 20/1 on Monday morning with BetVictor as punters took the hint.

There are some beautifully bred newcomers in the opening 7f Fillies’ Novice event at Leicester including Chosen Star who runs in the colours of Her Majesty the Queen but is likely to need further going forward.

Two with previous experience Amber Island and Woodhouse (2.20) are taken to fight out the finish, however, with marginal preference for the Sir Michael Stoute-trainer daughter of Kingman who stayed on in taking fashion when third over 6f on debut. Today’s extra furlong ought to suit. Amber Island, on the other hand, drops back in trip having made most when collared inside the final furlong over a mile at Yarmouth last time. The third – Pocket Square – has since won at Ascot and the Charlie Appleby filly represents a big danger.

Fantastic Blue (3.50) beat a subsequent winner – Starfighter – at Windsor last time when stepped up to a mile-and-a-half for the first time. He is taken to follow up from a 5lbs higher mark for Ismail Mohammed with Pat Cosgrave keeping the mount on a colt who has had just six career starts. He remains open to considerable improvement.

Six Strings (4.55) is 3lbs higher than when second at Musselburgh last week but he really ought to have won and is another example of Mick Appleby improving horses from other yards. The selection won first time out for the stable at Catterick last month over 6f, but today’s additional furlong is well within his compass. He is taken to beat the 3-y-old Chatham House who will appreciate the return to 7f and is considered the main danger.

At Worcester the winning flat/hurdler Byron Flyer makes his chase debut at the age of eight for Ian Williams. He is half-brother to a winning chaser, but preference is for Landsman (2.40) who was rated 6lbs inferior to Byron Flyer over timber but who shaped with plenty of encouragement on his chase debut when runner up at Southwell.

Desert Roe (4.45) finished third at Fontwell last time over hurdles having won three of his previous four starts in point-to-points. Jack Tudor knows his 10-year-old well having ridden him in those wins between the flags and he has been dropped 1lb in the weights for that run in Sussex.

I will be keeping a close eye on the run of Honourable Gent for Rose Dobbin in the 2m 1f handicap Chase at Kelso. The stable were badly out of sorts last season and this is her first runner for some time. She could have some well handicapped horses this autumn/winter.

The vote, however, goes to My Renaissance (6.10) who only got as far as the eighth when badly hampered and unseating Jonathan England at Sedgefield last time. The selection had previously scored back at the Durham track and he is only 2lbs higher this evening.
