Enable is 11/10 at BetVictor to win back-to-back Arcs next month after Trials Day at Paris Longchamp on Sunday failed to throw up a realistic challenger to John Gosden’s filly. The 4-year-old showed her wellbeing when making all in the September Stakes at Kempton earlier in the month and is adaptable with regard to underfoot conditions.

St Leger winner Kew Gardens is 14/1 at BetVictor but he looks more a Cup horse for next year than an Arc winner although he could easily run into a place. Sir Michael Stoute announced yesterday that King George winner Poet’s Word was the latest big-name casualty and would miss the rest of the season.

The listed John Musker Fillies’ Stakes is today’s highlight at Yarmouth – day two of their Eastern Festival – and UAE 1000 Guineas’ winner Winter Light made a promising comeback when third at Sandown over a mile at the beginning of the month. There are mixed messages from her pedigree as to whether she will appreciate today’s additional quarter mile, however, and I just favour Chain Of Daisies (3.35) who could get a soft lead from her plum draw in stall one.

Henry Candy’s mare must carry a 3lbs penalty for her facile win in a similar event at Salisbury last month, but she will bounce off the prevailing good to firm ground and looked better than ever last time.

James Doyle was in the saddle when Employer (4.05) broke his maiden tag at Windsor back in the spring and he is back in the plate for the first time since in the Mile Handicap. Hugo Palmer’s 3-y-old has been gelded since finishing third in first-time cheek-pieces last month and the headgear is left off this afternoon.

Good Fortune is on something of a retrieval mission having disappointed in the listed Washington Singer Stakes at Newbury last time on ground softer than the official description of good. Back on fast ground he must go close and he escapes a penalty for his Lingfield maiden success back in July.

The debutant Laafy is worth a second glance in the market but I feel Walkinthesand (2.40) is entitled to improve on his short head defeat over today’s C&D on debut when he looked a sure-fire future winner. Richard Hannon’s juveniles invariably improve for their first start and he is taken to improve past a couple of today’s rivals who have better form in the book.

The Owen Burrows yard were under a cloud in August but his string are in excellent form of late and Wadilsafa (3.15) looked a Group horse-in-waiting when making all at York back in July off a mark of 100. I would be disappointed if he doesn’t go very close upped to listed company this afternoon.

The selection doesn’t have the best of the draw in stall seven (of nine) and won’t get a soft lead with plenty of pace inside him, but he doesn’t have to lead and is open to significant improvement having just had the four career starts.

Monoxide (4.20) makes his handicap debut returning to the track after a two-month break for Martyn Meade. The selection holds an entry in the Cambridgeshire (for which he is 50/1 at BetVictor) but he will have to run up a sequence if he is to have any chance of making the field for that valuable Newmarket handicap.

Back on fast ground Geetanjali (4.55) ran a cracker when runner up behind a progressive sort of Hugo Palmer last week and the filly is 2lbs “well-in” this afternoon. Silvestre De Sousa’s record on Michael Bell’s three-year-old is 12 and the champion jockey is likely to play her fast and late.

There is light rain forecast at Kelso, but conditions are likely to be on the fast side of good for their twilight card. Hargam (5.45) may not have got home over two-and-a-half miles at Southwell last time and this drop back in trip should suit John Quinn’s grey who has never quite fulfilled his initial promise but was a ready winner on his penultimate start.

Alfie’s Choice (6.15) drops back in trip in the feature handicap hurdle for Keith Dalgleish who has trained the 6-y-old to win his last couple of starts in the manner of a progressive young hurdler. This is his stiffest test yet, but it is possible that he is still ahead of the handicapper as he steps up in trip.
