The declarations were announced yesterday for Friday’s listed Rosemary Stakes over a mile at Newmarket and I am looking forward to seeing Maqsad drop back in class and distance. The filly is penalised 3lbs for winning the Pretty Polly Stakes over 1m 2f here over Guineas weekend, but her course record reads 211 and she is surely better than she showed at Goodwood in the Group 1 Nassau Stakes last time when she beat just one home. She is 3/1 with BetVictor and as long as the ground is no worse than good to soft, I believe she will take plenty of beating.

The Gp 3 Tattersalls Stakes for 2-y-old colts and geldings over 7f is today’s Newmarket highlight and Lord Of The Lodge has the best form on offer having been runner up in the Gimcrack last time to Threat. Richard Hannon’s colt has subsequently franked the form by landing the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster under a 3lbs penalty and if Karl Burke’s colt improves for the additional furlong, he will be tough to beat.

That is a big if, however, and the each way nod goes to the Hannon-trained maiden Manigordo (3.35) who would surely have gone close in a valuable Sales race at Doncaster earlier in the month were it not for meeting trouble in running. That race was run over six-and-a-half furlongs and the hope is that today’s step up to 7f will see him in an even better light.

In the listed Rose Bowl Stakes Withhold (4.10) is taken to bounce back after what was a slightly disappointing run in the Ebor although this return to 2m should suit Roger Charlton’s 6-year-old who is 33/1 with BetVictor for the Long Distance Cup at Ascot next month where he is due to lock horns with champion stayer Stradivarius.

Spirit Ridge (4.45) was below par over 1m 6f last time but that was at a time when the Amanda Perrett team were under a bit of a cloud and I hope to see Jim Crowley try and dictate the pace from the front and kick coming out of the dip. The selection is returning from a 110-day lay-off but do note he is entered in the Cesarewitch here over 2m 2f next month for which he is priced at 25/1 with BetVictor. A win here would guarantee him a run in the second leg of the autumn double.

Sir Michael Stoute’s Felix (5.50) has disappointed in his last couple of starts but has had his wind operated on and been castrated since his last run and Ryan Moore takes over in the saddle this afternoon. The selection won at York as a juvenile for Luca Cumani and ran a race full of promise at Doncaster back in the spring from a 3lbs higher mark.

At Pontefract Ayutthaya (4.00) has been raised 4lbs for scoring at Haydock last time and he is taken to follow up for Kevin Ryan. The ground was described as good to soft at the time of writing – Wednesday midday – but there was further significant rain forecast.

Max Vega (4.35) was allowed to go off 18/1 at Salisbury on debut but he ran a cracker to go down by just a neck and this stiff mile on soft ground should see him in an even better light. Richard Kingscote takes over in the plate on Ralph Beckett’s juvenile with stable jockey Harry Bentley required at HQ.
