John Gosden saddled the 2008 winner of the Breeders’ Cup Classic courtesy of Raven’s Pass, but it is worth remembering that victory from a decade ago was gained on ProRide rather than dirt – the British have never won the great race on dirt.

Back in 2008 ProRide was considered the future of synthetic surfaces, but the runner up in the Classic was Ballydoyle’s Henrythenavigator and a European 1-2 on ProRide was the catalyst for change. The Breeders’ Cup reverted to dirt in 2010.

With that in mind, I read with interest over the weekend that Gosden was considering a tilt at the Classic at Churchill Downs in November with his brilliant three-year-old Roaring Lion. I don’t personally think the grey will take up the option – he is 8/1 with BetVictor – but it would be fascinating if he did. Other potential British and Irish challengers are Aidan O’Brien’s Mendelssohn (12/1 with BetVictor) and Thunder Snow 20/1.

The Listed Foundation Stakes is the highlight at Goodwood this afternoon on ground described as soft by the racecourse on Tuesday. Gabr (3.35) is fitted with a tongue-tie for the first time having ran poorly at Pontefract last time even allowing for the fact that he raced on the wrong part of the course for the first part of the race.

Gabr has yet to race over a trip in excess of a mile, but his second to Without Parole on easy ground at Sandown back in May gave the impression he would get this easy 10f trip. His draw in stall seven – of seven – is a negative but the Stoute yard are in good form and he has been given the best part of two months to get over his poor run in west Yorkshire.

Pablo Escobarr (2.00) was no match for Line Of Duty – leading fancy for Saturday’s Royal Lodge Stakes – in a good maiden here at the beginning of the month but he ran a terrific race and the additional couple of furlongs should suit the William Haggas-trained juvenile. There are a couple of well-bred newcomers in the field and a market move for Alramaz would be worth noting, but Pablo Escobarr – another in a first-time tongue-tie – gets the vote.

Oisin Murphy has blamed himself for a couple of the rides he has given South Seas (2.30) so far this season, but he was badly behaved at Salisbury last time and this is very much last chance saloon for the four-year-old who has his optimum underfoot conditions. He is better than he has shown so far this season, and the hope is that he can outclass his rivals.

London Protocol is 1lb lower in the weights than when winning at Carlisle last time and Silvestre De Souza takes over in the saddle. He looks a worthy market leader.

Lady Dancealot (3.05) hasn’t had her conditions so far this season but Gerald Mosse got to know her when the combination finished third on fast ground at Yarmouth last time when she was well backed. Her sole win was gained over today’s C&D back in October and she gets the vote despite still being 4lbs higher in the handicap.

I think there is plenty more to come from Elasia (4.10) although she was beaten off this mark on her handicap debut at Newmarket (July course) last time. A daughter of Nathaniel she may have found the ground a bit too lively and I was impressed by her previous all-weather successes.

At Wolverhampton Falathaat (6.15) was slowly away but ran well enough on debut at Kempton over a mile although she was doing her best work late on and she drops back to 7f this evening. She has the plum draw in stall one, however, and Jason Watson takes over in the saddle.

Gododdin (5.30) was taken out of a very competitive race at Newbury at the weekend on account of the soft ground but conditions should be ideal in Redcar’s finale. The gelding is 3lbs higher than when scoring at Brighton last time, but that form has been franked by the Sandown success of the runner up Geetanjali last week.
