Real Madrid are considering a move for Raheem Sterling next summer, as an alternative to Eden Hazard.
Sources close to Real believe that Hazard remains their first option in the long-term, but they are looking at other possibilities including Sterling.
Hazard has just over two-years left on his current deal but he has so far resisted offers to sign a new deal – and should he get to next summer, he will be in a similar position to that of Thibaut Courtois – who was able to land a move to the Santiago Bernabeu.
Madrid are covering their bases, and fully intend to have their angles covered ahead of next summer – but sources believe that the brilliant Belgian remains their first choice, long-term.
Sterling himself is currently in talks with City over extending his contract, but it is sure possible interest from Real will not harm his negotiations.
Bookmakers certainly believe that should Sterling leave then his next destination will indeed be Real.
Real are 2/1 to be next in line, ahead of Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea who are all rated at 16/1.
“Sterling is yet to agree a new deal at Manchester City and as he’s into his final two years it’s creating a lot of speculation over his future,” said Coral’s Harry Aitkenhead.
“We think Real Madrid are streets ahead of any other club in the queue and if Sterling does leave the Etihad there looks to be only one destination at this time.”
