Rooney backed in to surpass Shearer’s record

Punters are backing Wayne Rooney to beat Alan Shearer’s Premier League record mark of 260 goals.

Rooney became on the second player to enter the ‘200 club’ when he registered that figure courtesy of a strike against Manchester City on Monday evening.

The 31-year-old, who is England and Manchester United’s all time leading goalscorer, has just announced his retirement from international football and he is now being backed to surpass Shearer’s mark.

Having begun the week at 100/1 to beat Shearer, the support has been such that Bookmakers have now halved those odds to 50/1.

Likewise he is now 3/1 from 6/1 to score 15 or more goals this season.

bet365’s Steve Freeth said: “Rooney was clearly a proud Englishman when putting on the Three Lions shirt and punters have been all over him continuing how he’s started the season now he’ll be channelling all of his efforts to Everton’s cause.”
