Rugby World Cup – Day Four Preview

The first round of fixtures come to a conclusion on Monday as the games dry up and the final home nation, Wales, take on Georgia.

Wales’ preparations for this Rugby World Cup has been clouded in scrutiny – firstly through a round of injuries ruling out key players, Gareth Anscombe and Toby Faletau most notably missing, before assistant coach Rob Howley returned home this week amid allegations of a betting scandal.

Wales will bid to do their talking on the field, though, starting with this opening fixture against a Georgian squad which blends youth and experience.

Georgian stalwart Mamuka Gorgodze has been welcomed back from retirement for the competition and their style of play will focus heavily on pack domination and hard hits, not something Wales will relish the prospect of given the fragility of their squad already.

But Wales rightly enter the first match as favourites against the side ranked 12th in the world, but Warren Gatland must ensure his side are not derailed by off-field activities and the media scrum around them.
