Saturday World Cup Qualifying Previews

Wales and Republic of Ireland continue their push for a place at next summer’s World Cup finals.

Both countries are in Group D with Ireland currently level on top with Serbia with Wales four points adrfit.

Wales host Austria and it looks like a must win game for Chris Coleman’s side – who are expected to qualify following their impressive showing at Euro 2016.

“We can win the last four games, and that’s no disrespect to Austria, Moldova, Georgia and the Republic of Ireland,” Coleman said.

“I know this is a statement, but I’ll say it – it could be Brazil, Spain and Germany. I have that much confidence in our players and our team.

“If we get it right then there’s nobody we need to fear. A draw in this game won’t do either of us any good, so you would imagine something will have to give. Both teams are going to go for it, but we’ve been here before and we know how to handle these situations.”

Ireland are in good shape in the group and they face a tricky away trip to Georgia, and Martin O’Neill believes they are facing a tough task despite the fact they have never lost to them.

“The good record the Republic of Ireland has against Georgia, both in competitive games and friendly matches, I don’t think that has any bearing,” he said.

“I think it’s a very difficult game. I think Georgia could have easily beaten Serbia. They played very well against us in the first half of their match in Dublin and played exceptionally well in Wales. They could easily have beaten Wales in Wales.”
