Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Sizing John will be going for the £1million bonus next year offered to any horse who wins the famous Triple Crown of the Betfair Chase, the King George and the Cheltenham Gold Cup in one season.

Legends such as Arkle, Desert Orchid and Best Mate all won the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park and the Cheltenham Gold Cup in the same season – but the Triple Crown was never on offer to them as the Betfair Chase only came into being in 2005.

Only one horse has ever managed the feat, with the brilliant Kauto Star doing it in 2006 – but now Jessica Harrington’s seven-year-old will attempt it.

Harrington told At The Races: “I think Alan (Potts, owner) wants to try and win the £1million bonus in England

“So it’s the Haydock race and then the King George before the Gold Cup.”

Harrington is also responsible for Irish Grand National winner Our Duke, who will be kept closer to home before a possible clash with Sizing John in the Cheltenham Gold Cup next March.

The County Kildare handler added: “Our Duke will definitely stay this side of the water.

“The ground doesn’t matter now as he went on good ground at Fairyhouse.

“If the ground was safe at Down Royal (JNwine.com Champion Chase) he’d go there, then Christmas (Lexus) and then the Irish Gold Cup.”

BetVictor offer 33/1 for Sizing John to complete the Jockey Club Chase Triple Crown next season.
