Solskjaer named United caretaker but Pochettino is favourite for job

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been confirmed as Manchester United’s caretaker manager until the end of the season, following Jose Mourinho’s sacking.

But the man understood to be their long-term target and favourite to take charge is Mauricio Pochettino – would not be drawn on the speculation.

Former Molde boss Solskjaer has experience of managing in the Premier League, but that was an ill-fated spell with Cardiff, who were relegated. But now he is has taken the chance to return to Old Trafford, with former number two Mike Phelan assisting him.

After sacking Mourinho, United confirmed they would appoint a caretaker with United links, so Solskjaer fits the bill, but they also revealed that they would be looking to appoint a new permanent successor in the summer.

Tottenham boss Pochettino has long been coveted by United’s hierarchy and he is firmly in their sights for an end-of-season move,

But the Argentine would not be drawn on the speculation linking him with Old Trafford.

“I have a very good relationship with Jose, he is a good friend, it is sad news. It is not my business what has happened in another club now. I am so focused on trying to deliver my best job at this football club,” he said.

“After nearly five years there is a lot of rumours about my position as manager at Tottenham. I cannot answer this type of question because these type rumours happen in football.”

Bookmakers have Solskjaer as being in contention for the job long-term, but Paddy Power have confirmed Pochettino as favourite to be in charge at the start of next season.
