Roly Poly gave trainer Aidan O’Brien a 23^rd Group 1 winner of the 2017 season by showing tremendous tenacity to win the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket. The well-bred filly, a full sister to last weekend’s Gp 1 Middle Park Stakes winner US Navy Flag, was claiming her 3^rd G1 success of the season and was cut by BetVictor to 12/1 from 20s for the Breeders’ Cup Mile and 16/1 from 20s to beat the boys in the QE2 at Ascot on Champions Day.

William Buick made a winning return at Ascot with his mount Blue Point halved in price for the Champion Sprint in a fortnight. The colt made all to win the Gp 3 contest and, with the form of Royal Ascot’s Commonwealth Cup looking better and better with ever race, he looks a fair price at 8/1 to reverse the form with Clive Cox’s star sprinter Harry Angel.

Buick continues his comeback this afternoon at Royal Windsor and gets the leg up on Godolphin’s Zamfir in the mile and a half handicap for trainer Charlie Appleby. The colt hasn’t been sighted since he was pulled-up in the Lingfield Derby Trial earlier in the season and is best watched in first-time cheek-pieces; with Lawless Secret (4.15) preferred for the in-form yard of Simon Crisford. The selection was a massive eye-catcher last time out Doncaster when second at the St Leger meeting and is a confident selection to go one better under Ryan Powell.

Greenness stopped Celestin’s (3.15) from making a winning debut last month at Beverley and she should take all the beating in the Mile Maiden under Martin Harley. The selection travelled beautifully on her debut before being out-battled in the closing stages but with the benefit of experience must go close to shedding the maiden tag the second time of asking.

I’m a big fan of Simpson (2.15) who disappointed last time out on soft ground at Yarmouth but is chanced to bounce back under regular partner Jamie Spencer. The son of Dragon Pulse impressed when winning a nursery over course and distance on his penultimate start and he remains well-treated from just a 4lb rise at the weights.

The soft ground at Salisbury should help the chances of Global Applause (4.05) who should take all the beating in the 7f Conditions Stakes under Silvestre de Sousa. Ed Dunlop’s well-bred son of Mayson ran well in group company last season as a 2yo and made a pleasing return when third on his seasonal reappearance at Doncaster. That run should have blown the cobwebs and, officially 8lb  clear on official ratings, can hopefully justify favouritism.

A 4lb rise at the weights shouldn’t stop Flood Defence (4.35) following-up his recent Sandown win and he is a confident selection to justify each-way support under 3lb apprentice George Wood. He won on soft ground earlier in the season at Doncaster over a mile and, after relishing the step up in trip to a mile and a quarter last time out, should go close once more over the same trip.

Moabit must go close for Paul and Megan Nicholls in the Season Finale Handicap over a mile and three quarters however, I’m willing to give Lustrous Light (5.05) another chance under regular partner Oisin Murphy. The son of Galileo was rated as high as 100 for former handler Ger Lyons and, despite disappointing in his first four starts for new trainer Ralph Beckett, is potentially well-treated from a revised mark of 95.

Twilight action comes from Kempton Park where Buffer Zone (5.55) is well-drawn in stall one to shed the maiden tag under Kieran Shoemark. The well-bred colt met trouble in-running last time out at Newbury and ran well to finish fifth despite being hampered in the closing stages. With the Roger Charlton yard in good nick he must go close to making a winning all-weather debut.
