The Duke – Goodwood Day Five

One big race handicap to concentrate on for Saturday; the Steward’s Cup at Goodwood. This is a big field sprint that is traditionally one of the most exciting cavalry charge’s of the season.

Andrew Balding trained the winner two years ago with the well-backed Dancing Star. Could history repeat itself with half-sister Foxtrot Lady? Let’s analyse. She ran a career best to win at Newmarket last time and that progressive profile is very much of interest. On the negative the runner-up from her July course battle has since run a stinker.

Lancelot Du Lac won this race last year but the big difference this time is the ground condition which is much quicker and works against him. Spring Loaded has risen in the weights for winning at Ascot and in-form sprinters are worth noting in this contest but the result is that he may be a little less competitive.

Glenamoy Lad was much improved last season but he’s not been seen since November and is hard to assess as a result.

Tis Marvellous is far more interesting on recent performances. He was a really close fourth in the Wokingham and while that line of form has taken some knocks he has solid each-way claims.

Silent Echo was one place behind on that occasion with George Bowen one more spot back – both are also considered.

Gifted Master doesn’t often run in handicaps but when he does he’s clearly a cut above. He carries a big weight though and in such a competitive race that is going to be hard to lumber.

Growl is off a nice weight. He was fourth last year off a full 10lbs higher and he has shown enough this season to suggest he may retain enough zest for a big run. He’s worth a stab at 14/1.

One at much longer odds is Pettochside. He is near enough the outsider at 50/1 but he has a good record at Goodwood. He has improved every season and his runner-up sprint in the Epsom Dash suggests he could be quite overpriced. We’ll also take him at long odds to get in the places. Three then to takeaway in such a hard race – Tis Marvellous, Growl and Pettochside. But we will need a whole deal of luck too. Bon chance!
