The big betting race of the weekend is the William Hill Great St Wilfrid.

Growl went off favourite for this 12 months ago and while he finished fifth last year, his placed run in the Stewards Cup at Goodwood this year would put him bang in contention.

Kimberella is in excellent form and clearly has the talent having won a Listed contest at Chester last time out.

Flying Pursuit scored on soft ground at York most recently but Pipers Note is certainly worth considering as he is on a role having won twice at Ripon. Terentum Star is a nice price – he won the consolation race last season and at double figures he looks solid for an each-way play from stall 15.

At 2.25pm at Newbury is the Geoffrey Freer Stakes. Hamada is the jolly and rightly so after some solid handicap form this term. He was a facile winner on the July course last time and looks the one to beat. Raymond Tusk is the biggest danger with just four runs under his belt. Victory at Hamilton last time was expected and while he didn’t beat a stellar field, his progression should see him compete for the win here.

To round things off we’ll look at the Group  2 Ladyswood Stud Hungerford Stakes at 3.35pm.

Seven furlongs of the Newbury track is quite a niche distance and the bookies are quite confident of Gustav Klimt being the firm favourite. He’s run really creditably in Group 1s this year and the slightly sharper trip should actually help his chances.

Breton Rock has won the race before and he’s very lightly raced this term. He was a solid third at Goodwood in the Lennox Stakes behind Sir Dancealot and I’d expect him to go close to turning that form around, so he represents some decent value for a place.  Gustav Klimt will bring in the win punters and each way Breton Rock looks the value.
