Tottenham consider Alderweireld options

Tottenham Hotspur are ready to sell Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld, because of issues over his contract.

Sources close to the club have confirmed that Spurs have a 12-month option on the 28-year-old, whose current deal expires in the summer of 2019.

However, if Tottenham take that up – then as part of that deal, a release clause of around £25million would kick-in, whilst if they sold this summer they could ask for double that.

Alderweireld would be happy to sign a new deal at Tottenham, but he wants in excess of £100,000-a-week to take him on par with the likes of Hugo Lloris, Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen – but that sort of deal does not appear likely at this stage.

Tottenham are now considering their options, and are continuing talks with the player’s representatives – but as it stands a breakthough is not expected, hence a number of clubs are now keeping close tabs on him.

Manchester United and Real Madrid have emerged as two of the favourites, and Bookmakers make Jose Mourinho’s side as the likeliest landing spot.

Paddy Power make The Red Devils 2/1 to land Alderweireld, and spokesman Paddy Power said: “Toby Alderweireld was left out of Tottenham’s squad to face Juve, so you’ve got to be asking questions on whether he’s about to leave by the back door.

“I’m sure there’ll be plenty of teams lining up to sign him – United are the favourites – which is hardly a shock when you look at Chris Smalling. Sorry, Mike.”
