Tottenham Hotspur are holding talks with Barcelona over the prospect of landing Portuguese midfielder Andre Gomes.
Spurs have parked their long-term interest in Ross Barkley until the New Year, partly due to his hamstring injury but mainly due to Everton’s reluctance to drop their £35million asking price. Chelsea and Arsenal have also shown interest in Barkley – but Spurs are confident he will now stay put.
As such Tottenham have looked elsewhere for attacking midfield and Gomes has emerged as a genuine target.
I understand Manchester United and West Ham United have also both enquired about the 24-year-old, who has also attracted interest from Italy and France.
But Spurs are now making strides and believe they could be the ideal option for the Portugal star – who has been made available by Barcelona.
Bookmakers make Tottenham favourites to land him and he is 1/2 with BetVictor.
Their Head of antepost Football Michael Triffitt told us: “Tottenham and West Ham would appear set for a deadline day tug of war over Barcelona Star Andre Gomes.
“Spurs are favourites at 1/2 with the Hammers 12/1 and its 16/1 bar the London rivals.
“The Portuguese international midfielder has not really convinced the Barcelona fans and with the jury out a move would perhaps suit all concerned. We await with interest how final day negotiations unfold.”
