United consider Toby Alderweireld deal

Manchester United are looking into a January deal for Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld as they consider bolstering their defensive options in the New Year.

United boss Jose Mourinho has made it clear to the club’s hierarchy that he would be open to letting any of his current defenders leave, including the likes of Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof.

He tried and failed to land Diego Godin and Harry Maguire over the summer, whilst they decided against a move for Alderweireld at that juncture.

Now United are taking a keen interest in Alderweireld – who could be available for around £30million. The 29-year-old’s current deal expires in the summer, but Spurs have an option which they are set to exercise – but if they do, then a release clause of £25million kicks-in.

United are still keen on Maguire, whilst they are also looking at Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly – but both would cost close to £100million – and it is doubtful that a deal would be pushed through in January.

Now Alderweireld is the option they are looking at, and Spurs are ready to do business – especially as they have moved on from the Belgian with Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez first choice in the heart of their defence.

Bookmakers certainly believe there is a real of Alderweireld moving in January to Old Trafford with United 3/1 favourites to land him with BetVictor.
