It is odds-on that a penalty will be awarded via VAR this weekend.
Leading bookmaker Coral makes it odds on at 2/5 that a penalty is awarded via VAR in the first round of this season’s Premier League fixtures.
It is also odds on, at 8/13, that an on field decision of a penalty is overturned, whilst it is 7-4 that a red card is given by a referee after a VAR intervention.
“VAR is going to be in use for the first time this season and we are expecting some chaos as it beds in. We go odds on for a penalty to be awarded via the system in the first round of fixtures and a red card is a real possibility at odds of just 7-4 too,” said Coral’s Harry Aitkenhead.

Coral is also taking bets on how many times the Match of the Day panel on Saturday’s show will mention VAR, with it making its hotly anticipated debut in the Premier League.
It is 3/1 that Lineker, Wright and Shearer say VAR 26 or more times, whilst it is 8-1 for 0 to 5 mentions.
“VAR is landing in the Premier League and all eyes are going to be on it over the weekend. We’re expecting some chaos and make it just 3-1 that it gets mentioned 26 or more times on Saturday night’s Match of the Day,” added Aitkenhead.
