Wayne Rooney is set to make a decision on his future this summer, but he could again be on the move.
The 32-year-old rejoined his beloved hometown club Everton in the summer, following 14 glittering years at Old Trafford which saw him become their top-scorer of all time as well as winning every honour available to him including the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, League Cup, Europa League and the Club World Cup.
However, his return to Goodison Park has not quite gone to plan – although he still managed to grab ten goals and was often deployed in midfield by Sam Allardyce.
Allardyce has been quick to insist that he still wants Rooney, but confirmed he had heard rumours about his future.
“Do I want him to stay? Yes,” said Allardyce. “There are rumours about Wayne going abroad – in China and America – but at the moment he is an Everton player and an Everton fan.”
Interest, unsurprisingly, is high in Rooney with DC United leading the chase to seal his signature as they look for a big name to herald their opening of their new Audi Field home in July.
American sources believe talks have taken place, but sources close to Rooney have told me that he may well wait to see what happens at Everton – with Allardyce’s own future, far from certain, and should a new boss come in, the former England captain could wait to see whether he features in the plans of his replacement, or not.
Indeed, as it stands Bookmakers believe that Rooney is most likely to remain on Merseyside, with PaddyPower listing him at 4/11 to remain whilst they offer 9/4 to play for any MLS club.
Spokesman Paddy Power said: “Roo’s return has been far from an Everton wonderland – and now he’s off to the MLS as another washed-up Premier League star.
“Either that, or he’s going to join Stevie G at Rangers. Now that would be a sight to behold.”
