All eyes in the golfing world are on North Carolina this week with the Wells Fargo the only event of note on the calendar.
The Wells Fargo was only established 15-years ago but is already held in high esteem on the golfing circuit and the calibre of the field in Charlotte this week is testament to that.
The tournament returns to the famed Quail Hollow after last year was played at Eagle Point, due to the PGA Championship.
The European Tour is hosting their Golf Sixes tournaments, which inevitably has a field befitting of its status, and therefore we won’t be covering it in any detail as none of the world’s top golfers are taking part.
See below as we run through the Wells Fargo tournament for you including facts, odds and picks from our own golfing professional Cliff Jackson and Betfair.
WELLS FARGO CHAMPIONSHIP
FIELD: A high quality field, the best since The Masters with Rory McIlroy – a two-time winner of the Wells Fargo – the early favourite – but there are a host of big names including Green Jacket winner Patrick Reed, Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler, Jason Day, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods.
QUOTES: Once again Tiger Woods is the talk of the town, but specifically about his clubs – as he is unleashing some new Taylor-Made irons. “I am very simple when it comes to my blades, I like them a certain length. I’ve played blades basically since I was 16 years old, and so I’ve traditionally liked a longer-size blade. But as I told these guys, I said, hey, you can put a dancing monkey on the back of a club, I don’t care. I don’t care what it’s stamped like. Just so it looks good in playing the position, which I like.”

Our resident golf expert is Cliff Jackson. Cliff is a leading youth coach and PGA professional at the famed Seaton Carew Links – one of the oldest courses in the world.
Certainly a quality looking field at the Wells Fargo and I do think Tiger will go well here, but I would pick out Rory to go well, but also Justin Thomas and Patrick Reed, the one-two from last season’s PGA held at Quail Hollow.
We caught up with Betfair’s Joe Dyer to get their views on this week’s action
The PGA Tour stages one of its strongest strokeplay tournaments of the year while the European Tour continues its experiment with short-format, matchplay, team golf.
Unsurprisingly the betting interest is all focused on the US action.
At the time of writing the Betfair Exchange has seen 55 times more turnover on the Wells Fargo Championship than the GolfSixes.
With Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler all bringing course-winning form to the table, Masters champion Patrick Reed making his first appearance since his Augusta win, and a slew of big names in the field including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Hideki Matsuyama, there’s little surprise in that.
Rory heads the betting on the Betfair Sportsbook, which is paying seven places this week, at 13/2. Thomas is 10/1 to win on the course where he landed last year’s USPGA and Rickie Fowler, Wells Fargo winner in 2012 and three times a finisher in the top six, is 12/1. It’s pure class as you go down the betting with 20/1 Jason Day, 22/1 Reed, and 25/1 available on Matsuyama, Mickelson and Reed.
