Weekly Golf Preview – World Golf Championship Dell Matchplay

See below as we run through the tournament for you including facts, odds and picks from our own golfing professional Cliff Jackson and 32Red’s Jack Milner.

WORLD GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP – DELL MATCHPLAY

  • Austin Country Club, Texas
  • First staged in 1999
  • Current champion is Bubba Watson

OVERVIEW: The second of the four part World Golf Championship – the Dell Matchplay is one of the few Matchplay events on the golfing calendar, and it always one of the most fascinating tournaments of any year.

Formed from the world’s top-64 players they are split into 16 groups of four players. The winners of each group advance to a single-elimination tournament on the weekend, with the round of 16 and quarter-finals on Saturday before the semi-finals and final on the Sunday.

The field is full of class performers, and is always good to see the world’s best backing match-play. The defending champion is Bubba Watson – but it is Rory McIlroy who goes into the weekend as favourite.

The pro’s point of view…

Our resident golf expert is Cliff Jackson. Cliff is a leading youth coach and PGA professional at the famed Seaton Carew Links – one of the oldest courses in the world.

We tipped up Paul Casey to defend his Valspar last week, so that was pleasing but this week and the Dell Matchplay and this is a total different scenario.

I look back and think to who I have been impressed with matchplay wise, and I have always loved the fighting spirit of Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed, they seem to enjoy this format and I can so those two have a good week.
