World Cup Preview – England v Argentina

England could book their place in the knockout stages of the World Cup with victory over Argentina on Friday.

The Lionesses opened up their campaign with victory over Scotland and another three points against the South Americans will see them cement their place as one of the favourites for the tournament.

England boss Phil Neville insists that despite have a win under their belt, they will not look to changing their mentality.

“There’s only one way we are going to play. And it is the only way we are going to get our teams to play,” he said.

“We have to develop this system and it’s the right way to play. We are going to make mistakes because we are that open.

“In the first-half against Scotland, we had both full-backs in wide positions the whole centre of midfield was open.

“But we trusted each other, we kept playing the ball into midfield and some of the combinations…we were three versus three in there but you wouldn’t have known it.

“Yes, we gave the ball away for the goal but we were trying to do the right thing. We were trying to pass it through midfield and I cannot criticise them for that.”

Argentina, whose squad is mainly part-tie, pulled off a huge result in their first game against Japan as they claimed a goalless draw and they will be hoping for more of the same against England.

“For women’s football in Argentina it is great that we are starting to flourish,” Argentine coach Carlos Borrello said.

“We are starting on our way and just starting to face up to these powerful forces in football.”
