World Cup Qualifying Preview: Wales v Republic

It is winner takes all on Monday evening in Cardiff as Wales host Republic of Ireland in a match that will only see one of them hold onto their World Cup dreams.

Serbia have booked a top-two finish – and a victory in their home game with Georgia will guarantee their place in Russia.

Should Serbia lose, that will open the door to Wales and Ireland to possibly jump into the top-spot.

Wales are currently in second and a draw could see them overtake Serbia, should they lose by two – but no matter what the Welsh need to avoid defeat.

Should Wales lose, then Ireland would go above them, indeed coupled with a Serbia loss then the Irish would take top-spot.

Both Chris Coleman and Martin O’Neill are anticipating a huge clash in the Welsh capital.

“All I can control is my own group, the players and my staff – that’s what I concentrate on and that’s what we’ll do in this game,” said Coleman.

“we’re just going to get on with our game-plan and make sure we’re 100% focused on doing what we’re good at. It’s the last game of the campaign, all or nothing for both teams.”

O’Neill added: “We’ve put ourselves in a position where we have to win the game and Wales probably the same. It doesn’t bother me if Wales are favourites because they have to win.

“They are at home so they have that advantage. It’s all to play for. The most important is to win the game. Whatever game plan we have we will utilise it the best we can. There is a bit of everything in it. You need patience, but not too much, and after 90 minutes we have to find ourselves in front and we’re capable of doing that.”
