The World Cup is over and we have seen some amazing football over the last month or so, and there were many wonderful displays.
I pick out my best XI…and I am going with a 3-4-3 formation…
Thibaut Courtois – Belgium
Relatively easy choice, especially after hash from Hugo Lloris in the final and he edged out Jordan Pickford.
Benjamin Pavard – France
Many would have seen Kieran Trippier here, but he was found wanting defensively against Croatia, and whilst he had the measure going forward, Pavard had a brilliant tournament. Going forward and back, he was wonderful for Didier Deschamps.
Harry Maguire – England
England’s star man, he got better and better through the tournament and was a danger in both boxes. An outstanding tournament.
Kalidou Koulibaly – Senegal
The Senegal star edged out Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen for the final role, but the Napoli really stood out for me and firmly established himself as a world-class performer.
Raphael Varane – France
Little doubt he was the best defender in Russia, outstanding performance throughout – for me he would have been my Player of the Tournament.
Ivan Perisic – Croatia
Brilliant late on in the tournament, a brilliant left foot and there were few better patrolling the left side during the finals.
Kevin De Bruyne – Belgium
The Belgian star proved in Russia he can live with anyone on the world stage with a series of top displays.
Luka Modric – Croatia
The Croatian captain was superb in Russia, taking the Golden Ball – nobody could argue with him being in any 1 to 11.
N’Golo Kante – France
Probably had to find a more consistent performer over the course of the finals. Top player and he showed it at the top level.
Harry Kane – England
The Golden Boot winner, had a very good tournament – no better striker to lead the line.
Kylian Mbappe – France
Already worth over £100million, he showed just how good he is and he really does look like the next world superstar.
